TEHRAN -- Brigadier General Massoud Jazayeri stated here on Saturday that Iran performed successfully in campaign against piracy in the Gulf of Aden.

“After a number of piracies were undertaken in the Gulf of Aden on the shores of Somalia and insecurities created for the ships’ trafficking, the Army and Islamic Revolution Guards Corps navy forces” effectively provided security to this important waterway, Jazayeri, the director of the Armed Forces Cultural Affairs Department, said.
Shortly after its first fleet of warships returned from the Gulf of Aden in July, Iran dispatched a second group of warships to the region to protect Iranian oil tankers and trade vessels.
Piracy has flourished in recent months off the busy Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean shipping lanes and seaborne gangs have seized several cargo ships and collected tens of millions of dollars in ransom for the safe release of crews and cargoes.
Jazayeri also emphasized that the security problems in certain countries contribute to piracy in the region
